FRANKFORT- More than 100 poll workers came to the state capitol Wednesday for a special honor.
Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, D-Kentucky, joined by bipartisan former secretaries of state, honored the longest serving election workers by presenting them pins.
Dozens of workers serving more than 25 years were honored, including Elizabeth Neal, of Powell County, who has helped Kentucky elections run smoothly for a whopping 64 years.
"Elizabeth Neal has helped run a precinct in her county since 1955 – nearly 64 years. She represents the kind of zeal for civic engagement we dream of and aspire to, and I hope there are many more Elizabeth Neals here today or signing up to serve," said Grimes.
Neal first got her start as a poll worker through her uncle. As to why she has continued to serve throughout the years--she says she needs to help fill the void.
"I just keep on, we need--if we still need somebody, I fill in," said Neal.
It's a family affair--her daughter has followed in her footsteps serving 47 years. Her granddaughter, not too far behind, at 27 years helping make sure Kentucky's elections run without problems.
This was the first ceremony of its kind.
