LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Saturday would’ve been Derby Day.

A year ago fans braved torrential rain but cheered none the less in the Derby best. But, this year, the coronavirus pandemic is the storm we have to endure.

Kevin Flanery, the president at Churchill Downs racetrack, said horse racing fans will see a derby this year.

“The Kentucky Derby will happen in 2020.”

Currently, the Kentucky Derby is set to run on the first Saturday of September. On a Saturday morning, Flanery would’ve been talking to trainers on the backside before moving to the front to acknowledge the work his team members put in.

“I want to say it loud and proud,” said Flanery. “Thank you to the Churchill Downs family. What they do you have no idea what they have to put up with to put a Derby on.”

2020 Derby signage is adorned all over Churchill Downs. The famous race has run on this track for 145 straight years. Flanery said this will not be the year the streak is broken.

Executives will be looking at all options and make the best, safest, and smartest decision. Flanery said a lot can change in four months.

“This industry is very resilient, our team is incredibly resilient,” said Flanery. “We will adapt and adjust as we learn new facts and do it the right way when the right time comes.
