KENTUCKY — On this week’s In Focus Kentucky program, we are continuing to keep you up to date on legislation that is moving in this year’s Kentucky General Assembly.
One of those proposed bills that is gaining a lot of attention outside of the state capitol is the Safer Kentucky Act, which is a wide-ranging public safety bill filed by Louisville Republicans who say they want to address violent crime in their home county and across the state.
After months of working with stakeholders, Republican Rep. Jared Bauman, R-Louisville, filed House Bill 5, which he says is legislation that is designed to tackle crime at many levels and modernize criminal statutes, some of which were written almost 50 years ago.
The Safer Kentucky Act covers many provisions, including those that deal with street camping and the rights of property owners.
During this segment, multimedia journalist Tyler O'Neill talks with the Louisville-based advocacy group, the Coalition for the Homeless, who explain their opposition to the Safer Kentucky Act, and why if passed by lawmakers this session, it could negatively impact people experiencing homelessness.
