KENTUCKY — During this In Focus Kentucky segment, State Auditor Mike Harmon discusses prepping for transition of power following the November General election.
Current two-term State Treasurer Allison Ball, R.Ky, won by a comfortable margin of about 60% to 40% against Democratic challenger Kimberle Reeder, according to unofficial returns.
Outgoing term-limited Harmon explains some of the top challenges for the next auditor and what advice he has for his replacement.
“Hopefully, she keeps the same family environment which, you know, I think she will there. There’s a great team merit and non merit staff. I mean, just wonderful people, and really they, are what makes the auditor’s office so great. They are the ones that get out the day-to-day priorities. And I would make sure to also tell her that when she’s coming in, if she’s gotten certain audits that she will love, especially special exams, because so much of it, as I said, is statutorily required. But I would encourage that if she has some special exams that she’s interested in, just hit the ground running, you know, pull the staff together. Early on is the best time, like one of the very first audits other than the University of Louisville that I did is, Danny Butler came up to me. He was a Democrat state representative at the time and asked me to do the KLEF, the Kentucky law enforcement Foundation program. And well, it was very easy for me coming in just to ask for people and there’ll be a lot of energy to make sure that you know during that those first couple of years that the auditor can get done with what’s her mission to get done and what changes she would like to make,” explained Harmon.
