KENTUCKY — At the final Committee of the Whole (COW) in June 2023, on the “Imagine Lexington 2045” Comprehensive Plan Goals & Objectives, Members of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council voted to expand the Urban Service Boundary (USB), which restricts development of Fayette County’s rural land.

During this In Focus Kentucky segment, Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton joins the program to weigh-in on the Urban Growth Management Advisory Committee’s finalized proposed areas to expand the Urban Services Boundary. Just over 3,000 acres have been identified. While the Council voted for the expansion, Mayor Gorton, in a letter to council members, said she wouldn’t sign the legislation to expand Fayette County’s growth boundary because she felt the city’s “Urban Service Boundary has served us well, preventing expensive sprawl and supporting intentional, planned development.

Also during this segment, Mayor Gorton discusses improvements to public safety with the implementation of the $150,000 Fusus technology, which is software that combines all of police’s investigative assets, such as traffic cameras, Flock license plate readers and other cameras around the city, as one real-time crime center platform.
