KENTUCKY — Republican Andy Barr has served in Washington, D.C. since January of 2013, as the representative for Kentucky’s Sixth Congressional District, which includes 19 Central Kentucky counties including Fayette County.
Since he’s been in office, Barr has served on a variety of committees on Capitol Hill including as a senior Member of the House Financial Services Committee and Ranking Member of the National Security, International Development and Monetary Policy
During this In Focus Kentucky segment, Congressman Barr comments on a number of issues affecting Kentucky, including the latest on the Russia invasion into Ukraine.
"Ukrainian people are fighting for their freedom have inspired all of us. President Zelenskyy addressed a joint session of Congress by video technology after the invasion and was inspiring and asked for more assistance. Vladimir Putin is a authoritarian thug, a former KGB operative who has cracked down against not only his own people, but also the sovereign nation of Ukraine. This unprovoked brutal aggression against the Ukrainian people is outrageous and Vladimir Putin alone is responsible. But I want to emphasize that this didn't have to happen. A lack of deterrence was an invitation for this aggression," explains U.S. Rep. Andy Barr.
As the top Republican for the National Security Committee for the House and Financial Services Committee, Barr has oversight into the U.S. Department of Treasury and their sanction efforts, which he said, there needs to be more of for Russia.
"For the life of me I don't understand why the Biden administration continues to showcase a weak position on Russia, in the middle of this outrageous act of brutality and aggression, even as we hear intelligence reports of the Russians using chemical weapons, showing innocent civilians killing women and children as they tried to escape targeting civilian locations like movie theaters and train stations, preventing people from just escaping this, this act of aggression should not stand and we need to do more," adds Barr.
