KENTUCKY — A new exhibit in Louisville is honoring Black achievement in aviation.
During this In Focus Kentucky segment, we take a look inside the new "The Sky's the Limit" exhibit now open at Bowman Field.
"It showcases a celebration of the history of black achievement in aviation and being the airport authority, we feel it's our obligation to tell that story," explained Darrell Watson, Vice President of Strategy and Innovation at Louisville Regional Airport Authority.
The names Willa Brown and Tuskegee Airmen are just two of the featured honorees with Kentucky ties in this exhibit. Both broke barriers and made achievements in the field of aviation and aerospace, and their accomplishments are now being showcased to inspire young people and remind them anything is possible, and the sky is truly the limit.
"So, when you come in the front door, there is the exhibit that has pictures and products so all the individuals and organizations really explaining where they came from. For instance, Willa Brown is from Glasgow, Kentucky. A local Black woman grew up here in Kentucky, and was the first person to get a pilot's license here in the United States. And so, you can read about their adversity that they faced, and what they overcame to really lay the foundation for generations to come. For Black people to realize that anything's possible for them,” explained Watson.
The exhibit is open through Feb. 28.
The exhibit, located at Bowman Field's Art-Deco terminal building on Taylorsville Road, will be free and open to the public without an appointment Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
