LOUISVILLE, Ky. — There’s a new piglet at the Louisville Zoo and he’s charming everyone he meets.

Zoo visitors can meet the newest babirusa through June 18 from 10 a.m. until noon at the Zoo’s Islands dayroom. 

The piglet was born on April 29 to Patrice and Albus. Just like when they are in the wild, the male, Albus, will leave his newborn to be with its mother so they can bond on their own. This is the second piglet born to Patrice and Albus. Their first born, Babs, was born in 2015 and now lives at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans, LA.

“Every animal birth is significant,” explains Dan Maloney, Louisville Zoo director. “This is what our Zoo community does. We save animals together. Along with other AZA-accredited zoos, your Louisville Zoo is proud to tell the story about a fascinating and special animal we are helping to propagate and protect.”

Right now, the little pig doesn’t have a name, but he’s already making the Zoo home. According to Zoo mammal assistant curator, Jill Katka, “He’s been zooming around since day one — nothing is too much of a challenge for him. He has personality plus!”

Babirusas are found only on four islands in Indonesia and are considered “vulnerable” because of overhunting and destruction of their habitat. Zoo visitors wanting to help support and care for the babirusas can help “adopt” the animals. All the information can be found on the Zoo’s website.

After Father’s Day, June 18, the babirusas will begin their rotation throughout the four viewing areas of the unique Islands exhibit, which also features Sumatran tigers, orangutans, siamangs and tapirs.

The Louisville Zoo is open every day from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. until Sept. 17.
