LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Norton Children’s Medical Group took the wraps off a brand new pediatric office in Louisville’s Russell neighborhood.
Norton says the new office will offer care to thousands of kids a year.
Carol Mayes lives in the Russell neighborhood. She’s called Louisville home her entire life. She’s a mother of four boys ages 30, 18, 16, and her youngest son, Don Jr., is 11. Her children’s health is incredibly important to her. To get to their doctor now, she has to travel at least two miles.
“Was it frustrating?” Mayes said. “Yeah, it was a little… because my kids come first before me.”
Mayes’ youngest son, Don Jr., cut the ribbon at the brand new pediatric office. The facility, on West Broadway, inside the Seven Counties Services building, will offer primary and speciality care to about 4,000 kids a year. There’s over 2,200 sq. ft. of exam rooms and lab space. There’s also an on-site pharmacy. Children helped decorate the walls with bold, colorful artwork.
The new center is in Louisville’s Russel neighborhood, an area providers say needs pediatric primary care.
Nurse practitioner, Kim Williams said, “My hope is they will feel heard, and they will feel like they’re getting the best care.” Williams added, “I honestly hope that soon we will outgrow this space and be able to expand into some more community outreach programs for the neighborhood.”
Norton Healthcare said it did a city-wide survey last year to identify community health care gaps.
“What the community in many of the underserved areas told us over the past year was that access is so important. Permanency in a neighborhood was so important. Being able to build relationships so that trust could be re-established was so important. But what we also heard is there’s a real need, a real desire for dedicated pediatric services in Louisville’s west and underserved area that we are standing in right now,” Norton Healthcare president and CEO Russell Cox said.
All of it is exciting for Mayes and her family.
“Because it’ll be real close to me. I don’t have to drive a long way to get where I’m going to take my kids to the doctor.” Mayes explained.
The new office opens on Monday July 24. They already have appointments scheduled. Appointments are available now and can be requested online.
