OWENSBORO, Ky. — A state-regulated day care center is coming to the YMCA in Owensboro

Kristi Harrison, the Chief Development Officer for the Owensboro YMCA, said, “One of the great things about us being state-regulated is that we offer this care to low-income families at little to no cost to them.”

The YMCA is partnering with the Public Life Foundation to create a day care for infants, toddlers and pre-K kids with curriculum provided by the state.

Harrison said, “We will have [a] specific curriculum that gets them ready for kindergarten, ready their score for when they go in.”

The YMCA will build a new child care center and it will be ready by Aug. 2025. Much of the funding will come from the Public Life Foundation and from the state, county and city.

Tom Bontrager, president and CEO of the Owensboro YMCA, said, “We’re going to spend $1.5 million to spend on the new child care center, and which is now under construction.”

The new center, which will be next door to the YMCA, will host classes they already offer for kindergarteners and grade school kids

Harrison said, “And then the rooms you currently see here are going to be open up for our preschoolers all day, full time.”
