FRANKFORT- Pregnant workers in Kentucky could get some extra protections.

Senate Bill 18 was given final passage by the House Thursday. The measure sponsored by Sen. Alice Forgy Kerr, R-Lexington, would create reasonable accommodations employers must provide for pregnant employees. Some of those accommodations are things like allowing longer or more frequent breaks, time off to recover from childbirth, less strenuous or less hazardous position, among other things. The bill only applies to employers with 15 or more employees.

The ACLU of Kentucky celebrated the passage of the bill.

“The passage of the Pregnant Workers Act Senate Bill 18 is a great victory for Kentucky families.  Senate Bill 18 provides much-needed clarity for employers and reasonable protections for pregnant workers to prevent problems before they start.  After working with a broad array of partners for a number of years to pass these critical protections, we are thrilled the General Assembly brought this law to final passage," ACLU-KY advocacy director Kate Miller said in a statement.

Senate Minority Floor Leader Morgan McGarvey, D-Louisville, also celebrated the passage of the bill as a high point of the session.

"I think that's an example of something we've done well where we got people together," he said.

The bill now heads to Gov. Bevin's desk for final approval.
