LEXINGTON, Ky. — Years ago, Kentucky native Betsy Johnson was standing in front of the Supreme Court of the United States, arguing a case she was working on. Fast forward to now, Johnson is mourning the loss of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and reflecting on her impact.

Johnson, a Lexington health care attorney, says she'll always treasure the time she presented her case in front of Ginsburg. At only 33 years old, a case she was working on went to the Supreme Court.

“So when I started off the argument, I got, I don't know, not even a minute into it, she asked me a question and ...  I thought, 'come on, let me at least get used to what I'm saying.' And, of course, I was as nervous as all get out. I mean my stomach was very upset,” Johnson said.

As a woman in the legal field, Ginsburg has always been a huge inspiration for Johnson, and she will always remember that feeling she had as she presented her facts in the courtroom.

“I remember thinking, 'oh gosh, Justice Ginsburg you’re supposed to be on my side, right, you should make this easy for me,' and right off the bat she asked me a question. It was great,” Johnson reflected.

After almost 30 years of practicing law, Johnson says that Ginsburg will forever be a role model for not only herself but for women all over the legal field.

“She had such a remarkable career outside of the United States Supreme Court I think most of us think of her as just a Supreme Court justice. But you know, the facts are she was a trailblazer for women and especially women in the legal field,” Johnson said.
