LEXINGTON, Ky. — City leaders gathered in Lexington Wednesday for a special meeting to discuss COVID-19 and its impact on Kentucky's second-largest city.

Mayor Linda Gorton reported 4,106 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Lexington as of Wednesday and 48 deaths from the virus.

Health Commissioner Dr. Kraig Humbaugh says based on data from the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department, the 25-to-34-year-old age bracket has the largest percentage of coronavirus cases with 20 percent. Humbaugh also says while many areas of the state are seeing coronavirus numbers plateau, that’s not the case for Kentucky's second-largest city.

“Unfortunately, we're not seeing really the plateau that other areas of the state are. And we are in urban areas, we're a little bit different from many other areas of the state. But our rates continue, our numbers and cases continue to rise here and about the same trajectory as they have been as we've been seeing in the past few months,” explains Humbaugh

Another area of focus discussed during Wednesday’s meeting was the rising number of cases inside the Fayette County Detention Center.

60 inmates and five staff members have tested positive for the virus as of this week.

Lexington’s mayor and city council members shared that one of their primary focuses over the coming weeks is to work on plans on addressing how to stop the spread of the virus at the detention center.
