FRANKFORT, Ky. — Kentucky State University is allowing students to choose how they'll begin their fall semester.

What You Need To Know

  • Kentucky State University gives students choices for return

  • Choices include different configurations of online, hybrid courses

  • Students will receive laptop with technology assistance

  • Q&A sessions available about return plan

The new initiative, called BREDS Choice, provides students a number of formats, including online and hybrid options. Students may choose from the following:

  • Online student living in the residence halls
  • Online student living off-campus
  • Online student living at home
  • Hybrid student living in the residence halls
  • Hybrid student living in hotel
  • Hybrid student living off-campus

Courses will be offered either hybrid or online. Hybrid courses include face-to-face instruction with reduced classroom size and classes via the university's learning platform, Blackboard, on alternating days. Online courses will include instruction through Blackboard with material provided or recorded by faculty.

If a student chooses the hybrid option, they can still switch to online instruction if they become uncomfortable with face-to-face learning.

Students also have a choice of living in residence halls or not. Students can live in a single room with or without a roommate. For those who opt for a roommate, students living together can be in common areas together while following social distancing guidelines. Students can also live in a partner hotel with a roommate.

Meal plans will be available for on and off campus students.

Another part of the university's back to school plan includes a laptop with technology assistance from Kentucky State's information technology office at no cost to students.

All students will also receive a COVID-19 safety kit, information about testing and access to the GO K-STATE app, available in the Apple and Google stores.

Several Q&A sessions about BREDS Choice are available with the university's President Brown Wednesday, Aug. 5:

  • University staff – Noon – 1 p.m.
  • Freshmen – 2-3 p.m.
  • Returning students – 4-5 p.m.
