DOWNEY, Calif. — Three youth housed at the Los Padrinos Juvenile Detention Facility in Downey were taken to an outside hospital for medical evaluation and treatment related to a possible substance-related situation, facility authorities said Saturday.

The affected youth underwent routine medical observation and two have already returned to the institution, according to a Los Padrinos news release.

"The safety and well-being of all youth in our care remains our top priority. The department is committed to a thorough review and will take all necessary steps to prevent incidents of this nature in the future," reads an earlier statement from the juvenile facility.

LA County Probation Department Communications Director Vicky Waters told Spectrum News that the third youth was transported back to the institution last night.

Law enforcement officials, together with the Los Angeles County Probation Department, has launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the possible substance-related matter, facility officials said.

"We are continuing to investigate with our law enforcement partners,” she said in a statement to Spectrum News.
