LOS ANGELES — California U.S. Senator Adam Schiff said insurance companies need to move quickly to help those who have lost homes in the deadly fires that have destroyed thousands of homes and forced the evacuation of over 100,000 residents.
“They need to get money out the door to help people quickly. FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) needs to do the same, and we need to make sure people are getting good information from federal agencies,” he said in an exclusive interview with Spectrum News.
Schiff joined Spectrum News on Monday to discuss the heroism he has witnessed over the days as the Palisades and Eaton wildfires continue to ravage parts of the Los Angeles region.
Sen. Schiff said that it was hopeful news that the Palisades Fire had spread little in the past 36 hours, but he remains worried because the winds are expected to increase in the coming hours and days. The Palisades Fire, as of Monday afternoon, has burned 23,000 acres and is 14% contained. The Eaton Fire in Altadena has charred 14,117 acres and was 33% contained as of Monday.
“If we can get through the next two or three days without this fire growing, then we may finally enter a new phase where we can focus more on the recovery than on putting down the flames,” he said.
Sen. Schiff said FEMA is already on the ground and already present in shelters, working to get funds out the door for those affected by the fires.
The California senator also reiterated that homeowners who have insurance can also receive some FEMA help.
“We’ve had a lot of experience with fires here in Southern California, but never anything like this,” he said. “We are going to work together as a community, as a state, as a country to help you rebuild. These communities are coming back and we want you part of these communities.”
