LAGUNA HILLS, Calif. — The Department of Motor Vehicles has announced the field office in Laguna Hills will close permanently.

The Laguna Hills location will close permanently at 5 p.m. on Friday.

“The DMV’s Laguna Hills office, which opened in 1987, does not meet the current needs of the DMV,” the agency said.

Laguna Wood Mayor Pro Tem Shari Horne who lives in Laguna Woods Village, says the closure will be inconvenient and worries about people having to drive further to get things like vision tests, photos taken, and REAL ID requirements done.

Assemblymember Diane Dixon72nd District, said the landlord of the location has offered to keep rents at below-market value and fund upgrades and modifications to the building.

According to the DMV Public Affairs department, Orange county would be left with five field offices, after the Laguna Hills location shuts down.

Surrounding counties in Southern California have the following number of field offices: 26 in Los Angeles county, 10 in Riverside County, 8 in San Bernardino County, and 8 in San Diego County.
