Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba, the two stars of Spectrum Originals' debut show, the cop drama L.A.'s Finest, dropped by The Beat on 1 to discuss the show with anchor Giselle Fernandez.

Union and Alba talked about using the show as a platform for creating positive change in Hollywood and some of the elements that set L.A.'s Finest apart from typical cop shows.

"At least there's an awareness that things need to change and I think we are part of really showing what it could be," said Alba.

"One of the first times we've seen a cop show with two women at the helm, two women of color at the helm, who don't need a guy, or a series of men to come save them from themselves or save them from being inept at their jobs," added Union.

"Most procedurals, the crime is really the main character and everything revolves around the crime and all of that, and a lot of the characters, especially the female characters, have so much emotion about the crime," said Alba. "But when you talk to detectives and people who are everyday, out there, especially detectives who are solving cases for a living, it's just another day at the office."

The two actresses also served as executive producers on the show and deliberately created an on-set culture that was markedly different from a typical Hollywood production.

"We've been able to create the type of show where you get action, drama, a bit of romance, comedy, and we can still all be active participants in our real lives," said Union.

New episodes of the 13-episode series will drop every Monday until the season finale. The first three episodes of L.A.'s Finest are currently available on demand exclusively for Spectrum video subscribers.
