In an extra-inning stunner, the Hawaii baseball team shook free of Cal Poly’s grip on Friday night’s game at Baggett Stadium and dealt the Mustangs their first loss of the Big West season.

The 4-2 decision in San Luis Obispo, Calif., came courtesy of a tying rally in the ninth inning rally and the go-ahead two-run homer from Shunsuke Sakaino in the top of the 10th. It was the fourth time this season that UH (24-8, 10-6 Big West) prevailed in a game it trailed going into the ninth.

Isaiah Magdaleno (4-0) worked the last two innings without a run allowed, escaping a two-out, bases-loaded jam with a strikeout in the ninth. Bestowed the lead for the 10th, the sophomore allowed a two-out double to Braxton Thomas, then fanned Jake Downing, who represented the tying run for the only team in the country that was still unbeaten in conference play.

UH to moved to 2-0 on its two-week, eight-game road trip. The teams continue the series at noon Hawaii time Saturday.

Cal Poly (23-9, 12-1) was off to the second-best start in Big West history and appeared poised to continue it behind a sublime outing from starter Griffin Naess, who went eight innings with seven strikeouts and just four hits and one walk allowed. But Mustangs closer Tanner Sagouspe blew the save in the ninth; Ben Zeigler-Namoa led off with a single, Jared Quandt reached on an error, Kamana Nahaku sacrifice bunted them over and UH starting pitcher Itsuki Takemoto — still in the game as a designated hitter — brought in Zeigler-Namoa with a shallow sacrifice fly to left. Quandt was subsequently thrown out stealing third to end the half-inning; the UH right fielder motioned for replay review, but there was no capability for replay at Baggett for the livestreamed game.

Xaige Lancaster drew a one-out walk in the 10th but was thrown out stealing second. Pinch hitter Jack Salmon then drew an eight-pitch walk and Sakaino crushed a no-doubt ball over the right-field fence on a 1-0 count.

It was the third homer of the season for Sakaino, second on the team behind Nahaku (six).

The Mustangs had their nation-best nine-game winning streak snapped and dropped into a tie with UC Irvine atop the conference.

Takemoto went 5 1/3 innings with six hits allowed for the no-decision. Cory Ronan had one of his sharpest relief outings to date, getting a strikeout and foulout with the bases loaded in the sixth and lasting until Magdaleno came on for the ninth. Ronan yielded only two walks.
