THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — From the very start of training camp, Rams head coach Sean McVay knew this year would be different.
He and every NFL head coach have had to preach the importance of safety protocols because of COVID-19. For the most part the Rams have been coronavirus free. But it hasn't come without controversy as McVay was reprimanded by the league for not keeping his mask on during the season opener.
Across the NFL things haven’t been so smooth. Over 15 games have been either postponed or rescheduled. On Monday night, the 49ers had to play their home game in Arizona because of Santa Clara County COVID restrictions. Some wondered would the Rams and Chargers be next?
Though, for right now the teams are still playing at SoFi Stadium, and for McVay it’s all about following the NFL’s policy.
“The only difference as of late, when they’ve really kinda tightened down on some of the protocols with the league, is that we’ve met a little bit more virtually,” the coach said.
Tuesday night, Ravens receiver, Dez Bryant was pulled from a game just before it started because of a positive COVID test, yet the game still was played. Commissioner Roger Goodell doesn’t envision the NFL going to a bubble site despite all the league schedule shuffling that's occurring.
“Because we believe our protocols are working,” said Goodell last week.
“We would consider further isolations to reduce the risks for all of our personnel so that they’re not exposed to the virus and bring it to the facilities or to the club," Goodell added.
As for McVay, he’s focused on football and is optimistic COVID-19 won’t ruin the season’s home stretch.
“I’ve really been impressed with just the overall, the way the league is operated, and that’s been a good thing. Hopefully, we can complete the season and get to the playoffs, and play all those games as well.”
His first-place Rams are fighting for a NFC West title with their sights set on a return to the Super Bowl.
