LOS ANGELES – With the Major League Soccer season suspended, the Los Angeles Galaxy hasn’t played an official match on its home field at Dignity Health Sports Park since March 7.
MLS has postponed matches until at least June 8 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Goalkeeper David Bingham, who came up with a clutch penalty save in the Galaxy's last game against the Vancouver Whitecaps, was just as surprised as his teammates when he heard their match against David Beckham's Inter Miami was postponed.
“Basically Wednesday everything is normal. So, Friday afternoon, everything is shut down. So, it was a crazy 48 hours for us, that’s definitely for sure,” Bingham said as he reflected on the initial days of the pandemic shutdown.
But even while goals are postponed on the soccer field, LA Galaxy is still fulfilling goals for the community.
Bingham recently partnered with El Barrio’s Tacos in Redondo Beach to provide meals for first responders in the community.
“In my view I just try to take one thing off their plate a day. I think now more than ever, if you can help someone when the world is kind of upside down, it has a little more impact than when everything is going status quo,” he said.
The team is also making sure health care heroes know they are appreciated with surprise FaceTime calls.
“These first responders aren’t doing it for the money. They’re not in the highest paid positions. They’re not doing it for the fame or the cameras. They’re doing it to genuinely help people. I think that’s a really cool thing that more people need to understand,” Bingham said.
As the Galaxy’s outreach continues, Bingham is encouraging others to use their free time wisely.
“Obviously this is a hard time and it’s very stressful. But it’s going to end. And you need to be ready to go when it does end” he said.
