NORWALK, Calif. - It's a story of David and Goliath. The first ever Mexican-American to win one of the most coveted titles in the boxing world.
Andy Ruiz Jr., also known as “The Destroyer” is now the heavyweight champion of the world. But a huge component of his success is his support team, including his trainer and friend, Manny Robles.
“He’s my friend first and foremost. But I’m his coach as well. So there’s a thin line between that of course. But when it’s time to go to work, it’s time to go to work, and when it’s time to be friends, we can be friends, but I respect him to the fullest,” Robles said.
Robles trained Ruiz at the Legendz Boxing Gym in Norwalk, preparing him for the biggest fight of his life. He knocked out Anthony Joshua, a British boxer and former Unified World Heavyweight Champion in a shocking TKO in the 7th round.
“It’s just blocking everything out. You know my job of course is just to keep him focused. And to believe. Everything here is positivity. All the negativity, we leave it outdoors, it doesn’t come into this place. Not just with Andy, but with every other boxer that I work with,” Robles said.
As Robles reflects upon the victorious moment, he attributes Ruiz’s success to the power of faith and positivity.
“We were all running in the ring like chickens without a head. We were just all over the place. Looking for our families and friends. The people that believed in us. The people that showed us love and respect,” he said.
Though the memorable triumph is one for the books, Robles isn’t done yet. He keeps busy managing over 20 boxers at his training center, and these days, everyone wants to know the secret to his success.
“I believe we all have a story. And the thing here is not ever giving up. Always having faith, and not ever giving up. Believing in yourself, and surrounding yourself with good, positive people. People who want the best for you and look out for your best interest,” he explained passionately.
For Robles, who believed in Ruiz when no one else did, he says the boxer’s journey is just getting started.
