LOS ANGELES (CNS) — A group of about 100 gathered near Los Angeles Police Department headquarters in downtown LA to protest the shooting death in Minnesota of a man by a police officer while escaping from authorities following a traffic stop, but no arrests were reported Thursday morning.
Protesters gathered at First and Spring streets and police declared an unlawful assembly around 10 p.m. Wednesday, according to media reports, which also reported some police barricades were knocked over.
The group began moving out of the area shortly after the police order was issued.
A flyer said more protests were being planned for Thursday in Hollywood and Pasadena.
The demonstration was held in the wake of the deadly shooting by a police officer of Daunte Wright after he broke free from officers who stopped his vehicle in a Minneapolis suburb for a traffic violation and found he had a warrant for a weapons charge.
Police bodycam video shows that, as an officer attempts to handcuff Wright, he twisted free and jumped back into his vehicle and struggled with police, at which time he was shot. He then drove off and crashed a short distance away.
The officer who shot him was arrested and charged with second-degree manslaughter. She was scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
