HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — Huntington Beach has declared itself a “non-sanctuary city.”
Mayor Pat Burns said his resolution is about a common sense policy that will make his community and home of 31 years safer. Burns was a police officer for 30 years in Long Beach and lived in Huntington Beach for much of his career.
He said based on his professional experience in law enforcement, without the ability to have working relationships with federal partners, such as ICE, it would be a detriment to public safety and make the job of being a cop even more difficult.

Santa Ana became Orange County’s first official sanctuary city in 2017.
Current Mayor Valerie Amezcua was not part of the City Council when that happened, but said Santa Ana will continue to be a city that “welcomes all.”
Amezcua said police and other city services will continue their policy of not asking about immigration status.
She said her priority remains public safety and quality of life and to serve her community and her constituents’ needs.
