LOS ANGELES — Asylum approval rates have reached historic lows. In October, the rate fell to 35.8%, the lowest since May 2021, according to Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse.

Latin American asylum seekers are the most affected.

Approval rates for applicants from Mexico hover below 20%, while claims from countries such as Russia or Belarus exceed 80%.

Immigration attorneys warn that asylum seekers will face even a greater challenge under a Trump administration.
