EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — In a Spectrum News exclusive, anchor Giselle Fernandez sat down for a one-on-one with California Gov. Gavin Newsom shortly after his trip to the southern border.

The governor announced plans to increase security and create better trade deals with Mexico to boost California's economy.

Newsom’s plans to build a new “port of entry” and send troops to the southern border are in direct contrast to President-elect Donald Trump’s plans for sweeping tariffs — actions Newsom believes are best not just for California, but for the nation as well.

Newsom also discussed what he calls the “shellacking” of the Democratic Party this election — what went wrong and how the party can recover, rebuild and reimagine itself for the future.

He went deep during his chat with Fernandez and made clear that the party needs a fighter to lead the charge against a Trump presidency.

The governor also outlined his efforts to fortify the state against any challenges to California values brought on by the second Trump administration.

The president-elect has been critical of Newsom and his liberal progressive policies, threatening to withhold funding from the state if Newsom doesn’t bend to Trump’s will.
