SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY — A town of 300 permanent residents, one café, one convenience store and a moose lodge may be where the “last honest election happens,” said Fawnskin Mayor Loni Emig.
Fawnskin is a town on the north shore of Big Bear Lake. In order to become mayor of Fawnskin, candidates need to collect cash — $1 a vote. And whoever makes the most money becomes mayor.
Two candidates are running this year: Billy Van Vugt and Mike Letavic.
The winner of the race will be announced Dec. 10, at Fawnskin’s annual tree lighting. The money collected isn’t pocketed. It goes to the North Shore Improvement Association that helps beautify the city and various projects in town.
