NORWALK, Calif. — The voting fiasco at the Iowa Caucus has some raising concerns about whether L.A. County’s new voting system will work.

New technology was used in Iowa to collect votes. People had a hard time using the new app instead of the old vote by phone system, and that’s what caused a long delay.

MORE DECISION 2020:

Early voting for the primary election began in L.A. county on February 3, and some of the first voters to use the new system said it could also be trouble.

“I worry about the new system but not in terms of cheating,” said voter Sharon Alexander. “I worry that it’s difficult and the biggest problem is people are not going to realize that they have more than four choices to vote for and so they may not call someone over to help them.”

LA County Registrar Dean Logan says the new Ballot Marking Device tablet system is an entirely different process and technology than what was used in Iowa. But, he is aware that debuting a new system can be tough.

“Of course it gives you pause and you think have we dotted all the I’s and crossed all the T’s,” Logan said. “It’s definitely a red flag for us but I think we’ve really put a lot of effort into ensuring that we can serve our voters well.”

Logan says they already have contingency plans in place in case anything goes wrong during the voting process, which will now be 11 days long.

"We do now have that 11-day voting period," Logan said. "And I think that’s going to be very beneficial as well."

Plus, there are free demonstration opportunities available for voters to familiarize themselves with the new system before voting. Visit the registrar’s website for more information.
