DALLAS — “Don’t you think a country that loves to think of itself as a winner should give its affection to a team that actually wins things?”
English sports journalist Don Riddell thinks it might be time to change who gets the title of “America’s Team.”
Riddell took to CNN’s social media to make the argument that maybe, just maybe, the Kansas City Chiefs should take over the title of America’s Team, given their recent success. Riddell not only emphasized the success of the Chiefs, but also their crossover with Taylor Swift, and her millions of “Swifties.”
But Riddell also noted that the Chiefs have a long history, with some of it actually relating to the city of Dallas. From 1960 to 1962, the Chiefs were called the Dallas Texans, before moving to Kansas City in 1963. The Chiefs were originally part of the AFL before owner Lamar Hunt helped create the deal that would merge the NFL and AFL.
However, it may not be entirely that simple. The Chiefs were one of the worst franchises in the NFL from 1993 to 2018, winning just three playoff games and failing to appear in any conference championships. The Chiefs also had the second largest blown lead in NFL playoff history back in the 2013 Wild Card round.
These struggles appear eerily similar to what the Cowboys are facing now, with only four playoff wins since 1999 and a plethora of devastating playoff losses.
The other roadblock to changing the name is the same reason why the name was created. The Cowboys have one of the largest, loudest and most supportive fanbases in all of sports, and they were deemed America’s Team not because of their success, but because of their rabid supporters.
If the title of America’s Team were to be changed, Kansas City, along with their fans, may still have quite a ways to go.
