LYNWOOD, Calif. — Washington Elementary School is one of 22 California schools that the nonprofit Turnaround Arts: California has adopted and brought the arts into the classroom to increase student engagement, diversity in the arts and social-emotional wellness.

Turnaround Arts counts with famous art mentors such as Grammy Award-winning band Ozomatli — whose band members spent a day with Washington Elementary students, delighting them with their music.

For the past ten years, Turnaround Arts has reached 35,000 students across the state’s under performing schools. A study of Turnaround Arts found that between 2011 and 2014, adopted schools improved 22% in math and 12% in English. Attendance also increased, while suspensions dropped.
