SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Choreographer and creator Emily Johnson says, “Understanding that the fullness of the tree comes with a little bit of distance.”

She’s bringing that perspective to the Broad Stage in Santa Monica with the world premiere of her piece “Being Future Being.”

Developed and led by Indigenous artists, the performance piece uses movement and sound and story as it invites the audiences to reflect on the environment, our place in it and the effect we have on it.

There’s also a free, outdoor component called Land/Celestial, where audience members will witness performances at three different trees on the campus of Santa Monica College.  

“It’s an emergency,” Johnson said. “This is an emergency time and we all need to attend to bettering our relationships with one another and with this world.”
