PERINTON, N.Y. — A wave of support has been pouring in to help 65 people who lost their apartments to a fire in Perinton on Tuesday. Most of them lost all their belongings.
Town leaders, volunteers, businesses and non-profit groups helped find them temporary shelter after the fire tore through a section of the Pines of Perinton complex. Meals arrived from local restaurants. Clothing and personal item donations overwhelmed affected families and those who organized the response.
"Our community is going to step up and help anyone in need," said Perinton Town Supervisor Ciaran Hanna. "And it's one thing I absolutely love about this community."
"For me and my family, when I get here, I can feel like we are getting more help because the people ... it helps [that] they really care about us, the community really cares about us," said Aweso Mckowma, who was displaced by the fire.
The town is working to find permanent housing for those left without a place to live. It has established a fund to accept monetary donations.
You can drop off or mail a check to the town hall on Turk Hill Road. Checks can be made out to the town of Perinton with a memo line "Pines of Perinton Fund."
Cash donations can also be dropped off at the town hall Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
