NATIONWIDE — George Floyd died in police custody in Minneapolis eight days ago.

Hundreds of thousands are marching, chanting "No Justice, No Peace" and "Hands Up Don't Shoot," all to call attention and to bring an end to the police brutality that took Floyd's life.

In the daylight hours, the protests take the form of non-violent civil disobedience. In some cities, police even stand or kneel with protesters, united by concern over a gulf in trust.

But the nights have brought instances of violence and looting.

It's reminiscent of a different era, just over a half century ago.

Then, as now, we are a nation torn by grief.

In that time, the backdrop was Vietnam. Today, it's coronavirus. 

Will it get better? Americans ask that with new urgency. 

Perhaps it will take looking to lessons learned from what America has already overcome to get there.
