LONG BEACH, Calif. – You might not think about wildfires when you think about Long Beach, but firefighters do have local areas of concern.

Jake Heflin has now been with the Long Beach Fire Department for almost two decades.

Heflin says there are currently four engines and more than 20 Long Beach firefighters dispatched to wildfires in other parts of the state. Regardless, every day there are 128 firefighters on duty in the City of Long Beach.

“We’re going to do everything we can to make sure we provide for the public safety and protect the property and the environment to the best of our ability,” said Heflin.

One spot that worries Heflin because of its brush fire potential is the El Dorado Nature Center. It’s 105 acres and homes are very close.

Just this year two fires burned about an acre each on the grounds. Several invasive species like eucalyptus make it even easier for fires to spread.

“By and large a lot of this stuff is all very, very dry. It’s so dry it snaps off in your fingers,” said Heflin.

A home within one mile of a natural area is at risk of flying embers.
