TORRANCE, Calif. – Bats, baseballs, football helmets, you name it, when it comes to supplying sports wardrobes and props for productions in the entertainment industry, a Sports Studio in Torrance is called on.

Chances are you know some of the sports movies they have worked with.

"Any Given Sunday, The Replacements, Miracle, We Are Marshall, 8 Men Out, Field of Dreams, Space Jam, 42," said Mark Koesterer.

They worked with the classic movie 42, the 2013 biopic about Jackie Robinson and the Dodgers.

"There was a lot of eyeballs on this project, from the Dodgers to Major League baseball, to Jackie Robinson's family, and so authenticity was really the keyword to everything," said Koesterer.

That authenticity made this project so unique. Koesterer and his team were tasked with replicating fabric from 1947 that no longer existed.

"In this particular case, on-camera, we wanted it to look authentic. So there was a certain texture and definitely a weight to the fabric that was important," said Koesterer

The uniforms in 42 were milled in China. They were then brought back to the studio in rolls for them to manufacture 750-authentic-period 1947 wool uniforms.

One of the interesting storylines in the film, was the difference between a zip-up jersey and a button-up jersey. In 1947 the Dodgers equipment manager had both in stock, but the zip-up jerseys were from the previous year.

"And Jackie Robinson was not thought to have any chance at making the team, and so they gave him last year's jersey because they figured he wouldn't last long enough to make the team in 1947. As it turns out he got a button-up jersey at some point," said Koesterer.

As Dodger fans remember 42, Sports Studio remembers how challenging and rewarding this opportunity was to honor the club's rich history, the story of Jackie Robinson, and the time period.

"Just the sheer number of uniforms, six professional teams that we worked on. The caps, the jerseys, the caps, the socks, the shoes, it was about as complex as it gets,” said Koesterer.

As the demand stays strong for his business in the sports entertainment industry, it is a testament to their storytelling, which is why all these great sports movies, have their mark on it.

"No matter what that story is our job is to make it look real on-camera," said Koesterer.
