LONG BEACH, Calif. – If you ever find yourself at Metroflex Gym in Long Beach, you might find a unique father and son team training together.
AJ and Antonio McKee aren't your typical father and son. The two MMA fighters are separated by nearly 25 years, but still have plenty in common.
They share the same toughness, same grit, and the same confidence it takes to succeed in the world of MMA.
"I honestly can say I was born into it," 24-year-old AJ said. "It was kind of a lifestyle. I would say it chose me, I didn’t choose it.”
“It’s the McKee family, that’s what we do," Antonio explained. "We fight. I came out the womb smacking, hitting, punching and kicking at the doctor.”
Antonio is one of the pioneers of the sport, widely known for the way he was able to utilize wrestling tactics inside the cage.
Despite his success, AJ insists his dad never got the recognition he deserved and that's why he's made it a goal to make his own name in the sport.
"The revenge of MMA is what I call it," he said. "My father was eight years undefeated. I feel he was one of the greats in this sport.”
AJ is 14-0 right now and is set to make history this weekend at the Forum in Bellator 228.
Together, he and Antonio will become the first father and son professional athletes to fight on the same ticket.
"This is part of his dream, it’s part of my dream," AJ said with a smile.
It's a dream Antonio says he thought would never come true.
"[AJ] used to tell me one day, 'Dad, I’d like to fight with you on a card.' I’m like, 'I ain't gonna be fighting that long,'" Antonio said.
But here he is still training every day right alongside his son.
After all, the McKee's are fighters and they won't quit until everyone knows it.
