LONG BEACH, Calif. – Some students at Long Beach City College can get their first two years free.
College freshman David Trejo is studying to major in business and communications. He is a trailblazer in his family becoming the first to graduate high school and attend college.
“It’s a pretty big deal. It’s kind of scary at the same time,” said Trejo.
Trejo went to Lakewood High School. Applying to college was stressful for many reasons and money was maybe the biggest concern.
“The one that I wanted to go to was Cal State Dominguez Hills, but it was very expensive so my family started stressing out a little bit and I saw them, my dad got more than one job, more than two jobs and then my mom had to start working too you know to save up money,” said Trejo.
Since he is a first time college student and a Long Beach Unified School District graduate a pretty magical door opened for Trejo. He is getting the first two years of college free at LBCC. Then he will transfer to California State University Long Beach.
City College spokesman Joshua Castellanos says LBCC started offering a semester free in 2008. In 2015 they bumped it up to a year and now they are at two years. He thinks the trend will continue or at least hold steady.
