SILVER LAKE, Calif. – It has been 55-years since music icon Eydie Gorme released “Amor,” which she recorded with Trio Los Panchos, an album with nostalgic songs recorded in Spanish.

Now her son, David Lawrence is paying tribute to his mother by re-releasing some of her most iconic music. Lawrence completely rearranged and re-orchestrated the songs on the album, adding his own style, but keeping the lyrics in Spanish. The album is called Nosotros, in English it translates to “us.”

“What I wanted to do was make this album with my mom and she passed and now I’m making this album for my mom,” says Lawrence.

Although he occasionally took the stage with his famous parents, his father is the singer and actor Steve Lawrence, he spent his career behind the scenes as a film and television composer.

Spectrum News 1 was there as Lawrence shot the music video for the song “Sabor a Mi.” It is the first time he has ever been in front of the camera and he loved documenting every moment.

All the primping is very new to Lawrence and a little out of his comfort zone. Eydie Gorme is known for her decade’s long act with her husband. She also had a huge solo hit in 1963 with “Blame It On the Bossa Nova.” However, it was her classic single “Sabor A Mi” that Spanish-speaking audiences across the world still play to this day.

While her career up to that point had been in English, the New York born singer is the daughter of Sephardi Jews and grew up speaking Spanish at home.

“She was a huge star by then and no one knew she could sing in Spanish, let alone speak Spanish so her existing audiences were blown away when they heard her singing these gorgeous songs with her singing front and center,” said Lawrence.

It became one of her most successful albums. Eydie passed away in 2013 at 84-years-old and while Lawrence always wanted to record a song with his mother they never got the chance.  

“I know she’s up there listening to it and I want her to be very proud of this album hoping she’s going to be proud of this album, I’m very proud to be her son and I want people to feel the love that I put into this record that’s what I want more than anything else,” said Lawrence.

Lawrence says the record is as much his mother’s as it his and he is hoping audiences continue to play her music for generations to come.
