WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – With just inches between his eyes and his prize, Robert “Dytch 66” Gomez has something in the works. Something big.
“I like being able to paint on this scale. It’s more powerful,” Gomez said.
Powerful, and attention grabbing – it’s hard to miss his art. Dytch 66 has been painting L.A. for about 25 years now, with about 15 murals spread across the city.
“It’s an amazing feeling. It’s one of the reasons I do it. It’s so gratifying to drive by a piece of work and everyone else gets to appreciate it,” Dytch 66 said.
Some of his work has particularly been appreciated – and seen – by a lot of people, on the famous pink Paul Smith Wall on Melrose.
“We worked with Paul Smith in the past Gay Pride, we did a rainbow pattern. This time they wanted to do something for Men In Black,” Dytch 66 said.
Artist Paul Smith had a cameo recently in the new Men in Black movie, with the lead characters all wearing Paul Smith suits throughout the film. Dytch 66 painted half of the famous pink wall black.
Dytch 66 says his contribution to the city he loves and grew up in is to add beauty.
“I feel L.A. needs more murals. It’s not green enough there's a lot of concrete,” Dytch 66 said.
A city he says just needs a little more color, because of what color does.
“It’s a bit cold. A lot of the cities are like this, outgrown itself, you lose the life,” Dytch 66 said. “It gives them a new creative something positive to think about,” he said.
His positivity can be seen on 20-by-20-feet scale, sprinkled colorfully all over the beautiful city of Los Angeles.
