CORONA, Calif. - Young athletes in Corona are on a fast-moving path, one that involves college and potentially, pro sports.
Their coach and mentor, Jordan Campbell, is a former USC and NFL player. As a football stand-out at Norco High, Campbell parlayed his talents into a full ride scholarship… and several seasons playing for the Cincinnati Bengals and Washington Redskins.
With his $5k Bengals signing bonus and a dream, Campbell started Winner Circle Athletics, a CIF-approved sports training program and charter school. The first of its kind in the nation.
When Aydin Breland arrived at Winner Circle, he considered himself an outcast of sorts. The oversized teen was often bullied and struggled in school. Not anymore. It’s not all football though. Girls here focus on soccer, softball, volleyball, lacrosse and tennis.
Academics are straightforward, 3.0 or better in math, science, English, and history. There are also 400 students in an after-school program centered on fitness and good eating habits.
Campbell estimates that 75 percent of his students will get scholarship offers, satisfaction that he has successfully come home to teach and give back to others.
