On Hollywood Boulevard you will find a local church overflowing with Millennials, singing contemporary Christian music and seeking what most of us are looking for: inner peace.

The church’s head pastor, Erwin McManus, recently released a book to address just that. It's called The Way of the Warrior. 

“The title is a little bit counterintuitive because the book, even though [it's] called The Way of the Warrior, it is completely about finding inner peace. The real core of the book is that the peace we are all searching for is constantly being warred against through anxiety, stress, depression, even despair, and fear. Peace, inner peace, doesn’t come without a fight, it doesn’t come without a struggle," said McManus.

The struggle he speaks of has become more evident than ever before. Suicide has become a leading cause of death for Americans, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. McManus hopes that not just his book, but also his church community, will help people in Los Angeles feel like they have a place where they belong.

“One of the things that I love about our community is that it’s incredibly inclusive, we’ve always said to people you don’t have to agree with us to be with us, and you don't have to believe to belong,” he said.

McManus noted, with transparency, his own battle for peace. 

“A part of writing this book for me was my own struggle for inner peace," he said. "My own realization that no matter how successful I became, I always had times where I felt like a failure. That in moments where I should only be celebrating and enjoying life, I actually was struggling with a sense of disconnection and even depression. And realizing that our best moments and our worst moments are not side by side, they can actually co-exist in the same moment.”

It is that very message of vulnerability and peace that attracted Nachbi Lacossiere to the Mosaic community.

“I was looking for a diverse community that had a culture of love, authenticity, and brought the best out of me," Lacossiere said.

McManus' passionate messages, inspired by biblical principles, seem to be bringing the best out of many people. The church has expanded to six locations and holds three services every Sunday. They’re currently providing a sermon series centered on the book.

“I hope someone, through reading this book, will feel as though someone has found them in their darkest moment, help them get up, and mentored them through the process of living the life they were created to live," said McManus.
