Gun deaths in the United States have climbed to a record high.
Nearly 40,000 people were killed by guns in 2017, according to a new analysis from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's WONDER database.
That marked an increase of more than 10,000 gun deaths from the 28,874 recorded in 1999, according to the study which compared 1999 to 2017.
While mass shootings such as the Route 91 Harvest country-music festival on the Las Vegas Strip, which claimed 58 lives, tend to garner widespread media attention, the CDC said suicide accounted for the majority of all gun deaths.
Of the 39,773 recorded gun deaths last year, 23,854 were the result of suicide.
