Let’s face it, airplanes are loud. Imagine trying to concentrate with planes constantly flying overhead.
That’s what students at the Carpenter Community Charter School in Studio City face.
Joseph Martinez is the principal of the school, which lies directly under the FAA’s proposed new flight plans for Hollywood Burbank Airport’s runway 15.
He says the number of planes flying over the school is a frequent topic of conversation among parents.
“We’ve been here almost 45 minutes and we’ve heard for sure four planes in that time period,” he points out.
It’s a big concern for Kirsten Abdo whose sons go to the school.
“These kids are outside for a lot of their day,” she says. “They’re doing PE, they’re playing, their lunch area is outside.”
As a mom of three, she’s worried about how constant exposure to airplane exhaust could impact her kids’ health.
“Because we don’t know. Even if doctors now say it’s safe, we don’t know for sure.”
While working in her home, she counted the planes passing overhead, and grew increasingly more concerned.
“There’s another one and that’s like four minutes since the first one,” she sighs.
But the FAA says heavy traffic over Studio City is nothing new.
Burbank flight routes were last adjusted in 2017 but even before then, planes heading east have historically flown over the area. The goal of the proposal, according to a spokesperson, is to keep the flights from Burbank separate from traffic coming into busy LAX.
Kirsten understands that, but hopes it’s not at her children’s expense.
