The new head coach of the Chargers, Jim Harbaugh, grew up in the Midwest but dreamed about one day living the LA lifestyle. Harbaugh's love of Los Angeles came from the 1970s television show called "The Rockford Files." LA Times NFL writer Sam Farmer spoke to Harbaugh about his personal homage to the series, and joined Kelvin Washington on "LA Times Today" with more.

"The Rockford Files" was a cop show that centered on Jam Rockford, who lived in a trailer on Malibu beach. Harbaugh met the show's star James Garner during his time playing for the Chicago Bears. Farmer explained why Harbaugh had such a connection to Garner and his character.

"Jim Rockford was this flawed character. He was always getting punched in the mouth. He was an ex-con who had been wrongly convicted, spent a couple of years in prison, came out and was working for $200 a day plus expenses, solving crimes around LA. He can always get himself in a little bit of a trouble...  There was humor to it and for young Jim Harbaugh growing up in Ann Arbor, that was his view of Los Angeles, this mythical place. The sun always was always shining there. It’s Jim Rockford, living in this dilapidated trailer on Malibu beach. And that always stuck in Jim Harbaugh's mind," Farmer said.

So, when Harbaugh moved to California in January to coach the Chargers, he set up camp in a trailer in Huntington Beach to pay homage to Rockford.

"Harbaugh had a little more Spartan, basic motor home. [Chargers offensive coordinator Greg] Roman had this big, beautiful sort of bus, and, and Harbaugh lived in that for, for a couple of months. In fact, during the Super Bowl, he had his brother in law drive it out to LA and park it at the beach," Farmer said.
