Despite the challenges he faced, Lopez saw a significant breakthrough with the premiere of “The George Lopez Show,” which ran for six seasons — and was supported by actress Sandra Bullock.

“Without her, I don’t believe any of that would have been possible,” Lopez said. “It changed everything.”

In the latest episode of “LA Stories with Giselle Fernandez,” Lopez opens up in a way he’s never done before. After finding incredible success with the show and stand-up comedy specials, he went on to make history as the first Latino to host a late-night talk show on an American network with “Lopez Tonight.”

The show lasted two seasons, and later, Lopez faced scrutiny for public scandals that included cheating on his then-wife and arrests for alcohol-related incidents. The scandals led to an estrangement from his daughter Mayan, who Lopez shares with his ex-wife, Ann. He says it was one of the most difficult experiences he’s ever had.

“Maybe one of the lowest points in my life,” he said. “And that was everywhere. That was really embarrassing.”

Over time, Lopez says he and Mayan worked on their relationship, and he made amends with Ann — something Mayan opened up about on TikTok. Mayan has a natural gift for comedy, just like her father, and their relationship inspired their latest show, “Lopez vs. Lopez,” in which Mayan and Lopez both star.

With the show heading into its third season, Lopez’s career has been revitalized. He’ll even be filming a new comedy special at the Dolby Theater, with more of a focus on aging and mortality. He tells Fernandez he’s a changed man — and he did it all for his daughter.

“There’s not a day where I don’t look at Mayan and see her as a newborn in the delivery room,” he said. “It’s definitely a gift that I would have never imagined for us… And it’s amazing.”
