Los Angeles City Council member Heather Hutt has served the city’s 10th district since September 2022. She was appointed after former CD-10 Councilmember Mark Ridley Thomas was indicted on federal corruption charges, making her the first woman to represent the district.
Hutt now faces challenger Grace Yoo to maintain her city council seat.
She joined “Inside the Issues” host Amrit Singh to discuss her campaign for the 10th district, which stretches from Koreatown through Mid-City to Leimert Park and Baldwin Hills.
“CD-10 is so important to me,” Hutt said. “I was born and raised there. My grandparents came there almost a hundred years ago, so we’re well-rooted in the 10th district.“
Hutt weighed in on Attorney General Rob Bonta’s letter requiring the City Council to redraw boundaries for the 15 council districts with Latino voting power in mind.
“CD-10 is the tapestry of Los Angeles, and we have a beautiful rich culture of everything. We have Little Ethiopia, we have Koreatown, we have Little Bangladesh, we have Mid-City, we have all the Baldwins, we have Leimert Park, and I’m here to represent all of it. One of the things I’m proud about is being on a committee that was already built up to talk about independent redistricting, put in on the ballot so the people can make a decision on what they want,” she said.
Hutt shared her approach to the issue of the city’s homelessness.
“We have to take it case by case and determine what kind of facility they need to be in, what kind of housing they need to be in, and what kind of services they need,” she said.
Hutt also discussed Measure ER, a package of ethics reforms designed to fight corruption at City Hall.
