Voters in Los Angeles’s 10th District will decide who will be their next leader at City Hall in the November 5th election. Incumbent Councilmember Heather Hutt was appointed to lead District 10 in 2022, following the resignation of ex-Councilmember Mark Ridley-Thomas, after federal corruption charges forced him out of office.

This November, Hutt is defending her seat against attorney and community advocate Grace Yoo, who previously ran for the seat in 2020 against Ridley-Thomas.

Grace Yoo recently joined “Inside the Issues” host Amrit Singh to discuss her candidacy for District 10, which includes LA communities like Mid-City, Baldwin Hills and Koreatown.

“My family and I, we immigrated to Koreatown Los Angeles in 1974, this August marked our 50th anniversary here,” said Yoo. “So, in some sense, I am living the American dream and I’m excited to be able to do more for the community that I love.”

As an attorney and community advocate, Yoo has helped bring three lawsuits against the City of Los Angeles, which she says is experience that will help her as a City Councilmember.

“It was sort of a situation where I was like ‘this makes no sense,” said Yoo. “I’ve actually had to bring lawsuits against the city, and it’s only helped the people.”

On the issue of homelessness, which remains one of the major issues facing LA and the City Council, Yoo discussed the ramifications of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that bans camping on public property.

“The city as a whole is not enforcing that, we are trying everything we can to go ahead and find housing for people on the streets,” said Yoo. “But when, the sidewalk cannot be utilized by people because there is a tent or encampment, that also is not OK by residents. It’s a situation where we need to be better...and there’s always two sides.”

In the interview, Yoo also discussed Ethics Reform at City Hall.
