Since 2009, Los Angeles' 2nd City Council District has been led by Councilmember Paul Krekorian. Krekorian's term in office will end in December, and two candidates are running in the Nov. 5 election to replace him.

One of the candidates is Adrin Nazarian, who served in the state Assembly from 2012 to 2022, and he joined "Inside the Issues" host Amrit Singh to discuss his campaign for the 2nd District and some of the key issues facing Los Angeles.

The east San Fernando Valley district includes communities such as North Hollywood, Van Nuys, Sun Valley and Valley Village, and Nazarian says the area is a special place for him and his family.

"The Valley is home to me," Nazarian said. "When my family immigrated from Iran, we made our way to the Valley. This is where I've grown up, where I went to school, where I've had all of my major life experiences."

One of the key issues facing the City of Los Angeles is homelessness, and Nazarian discussed his support for Section 41.18, the city law that bans homeless encampments within 500 feet of "sensitive" areas like schools and libraries.

"I see it as an opportunity to utilize 41.18 to move individuals into housing," Nazarian said. "You need to be able to capture individuals and have them in a protected environment, in a safe environment, in a place where you can assess, evaluate and see where the needs are so you can provide them the assistance that's necessary to get them back on track."

Nazarian also discussed his support for Mayor Karen Bass's effort to hire more police officers in Los Angeles.

"Government exists to protect its public," Nazarian said. 'I think our police officers need support, they need more resources, we need to expand the force so that we don't have less officers doing more work, and then creating more lawsuits because more mistakes happen, because there's less of them doing the job that more of them need to be doing."

Nazarian also talked about LA's public transit system as the city gears up to host the 2028 Summer Olympics.
