Congressional races in California could play a pivotal role in determining which party wins control of the House of Representatives in the Nov. 5 election.

One of many high-profile Congressional races in the state includes California's 49th Congressional District, stretching from southern Orange County to northern San Diego County, where incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Mike Levin is facing off against GOP challenger Matt Gunderson.

Levin joined "Inside the Issues" host Amrit Singh to discuss his reelection campaign and his record since taking office in January 2019.

"I'm very proud of the results that we've been able to achieve over these last six years," Levin said. "I get up in the morning excited about the work ahead. I've got a fantastic team both in D.C. and the district, and we really are just getting started."

Levin also discussed some of the major issues shaping the 49th Congressional District race, including immigration, of which Levin applauded President Joe Biden's executive action on asylum, but still wants to see a bipartisan border bill package get passed in Washington.

"This is, in my mind, a non-partisan matter of national security, but what happens is that you get politicians of both parties that would rather play politics and score points before an election before working together to get something done," Levin said. "My great hope is that we can turn the page after this next election and come together, because we desperately need it."

On the issue of reproductive rights, Levin criticized his opponent's position of being a "pro-choice Republican."

"I find it very politically expedient now to take this position," Levin said. "I think that voters will see through it. Pro-choice means that you want women to have the choice, not that you want to states to have the choice to ban all reproductive care."
