House Republicans failed in their effort to impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Those supporting the impeach believe Mayorkas failed in his role to secure the U.S.-Mexico border.

The final vote tally was 216 to 214 with four Republicans voting “no.”

In the Senate, Republicans halted the long-negotiated border deal, which would have also provided billions in aid to both Ukraine and Israel.

Sonoma State political science professor David McCuan joined “Inside the Issues” host Amrit Singh to break down the busy day on Capitol Hill.

“This was really a momentous day–in so many different ways–for politics in 2024,” McCuan said.

Looking at the failed attempt to impeach secretary Mayorkas, McCuan said it’s a troubling sign for Speaker Mike Johnson, even though another impeachment vote is expected to happen again. “It really was, kind of, an egg on the face of the Speaker,” McCuan said.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is also left in a bad spot according to McCuan after the border deal will not be passed, despite having bipartisan support.

“McConnell looks like he’s not in control. Ted Cruz calls for his removal. The Republicans, if they want to go and talk about governance and their capabilities, it was not a good day for them,” McCuan said.
